In this blog, I will be giving you some insights about the exact definition of lifestyle business in the digital world which can be categorized as an online business. Please read until the end to have a comprehensive overview of how to start your profitable online lifestyle business from scratch.

What does digital lifestyle business mean?

According to 6 Steps to Becoming a Lifestyle Entrepreneur: “A lifestyle entrepreneur is an entrepreneur who makes their living online. They don’t have a physical location or need one to operate. All they need is a laptop and connection to the Internet to manage their business. There are several tools and software they use, but they are portable”. If you may remember, on one of my previous articles Start an online business, live your dream lifestyle, I explained in details that how start an online business can provide full freedom compare to being an employee; geographical, time and financial freedom. Apparently this the most significant highlight of online lifestyle business compare to conventional business types. But the other question is What these entrepreneurs do? Here are some of the most common examples of thriving online lifestyle businesses today.

  • Professional blogging.

This is most probably the quintessential lifestyle business. Many bloggers now make their living through blogging.

  • Novelists, poets, journalists…

These writers prefer to take the freelance route instead of getting employment in established organizations or companies. They travel, go places, experience things and write about them online.

  • Consultants, coaching and advisors.

Services of online consultants are sought after these days, ranging from matters regarding finance, law, technology, health, travel, real estate, and more.

  • Online stores and affiliate marketing

E-commerce and affiliate marketing falls under the lifestyle business category if they meet the definition of one.

1)Who is your target customer?

Given the current state of the economy, having a well-defined target market is more important than ever. No one can afford to target everyone. Small online businesses can effectively compete with large companies by targeting a niche market. Many businesses say they target “anyone interested in my services.” Some say they target small-business owners, homeowners, or stay-at-home moms. All of these targets are too general.

Targeting a specific market for your digital lifestyle business does not mean that you are excluding people who do not fit your criteria. Rather, target marketing allows you to focus your marketing dollars and brand message on a specific market that is more likely to buy from you than other markets. This is a much more affordable, efficient, and effective way to reach potential clients and generate business.

My suggestion for you to start is to find some of your competitors online ( according to your niche) and look after their target customer models. This is the fastest way to start out there. Try to make define your market as an imaginary group of people according to below items:

  • Age
  • Location
  • Gender
  • Income level
  • Education level
  • Marital or family status
  • Occupation
  • Ethnic background
  • Personality
  • Attitudes
  • Values
  • Interests/hobbies
  • Lifestyles
  • Behavior

With this level clearly defined target audience, it is much easier to determine how to market your online business. You also can estimate where these people are most probably hang out online.

2)Building your empire foundations

The most crucial foundation for a lifestyle business is having a website. Everything I do online (social media being the exception) has been built on WordPress, my entire business revolves around it. What matters is that you get hosting (which will allow you to build unlimited websites), and install WordPress on your new domain.

Once you feel comfortable with that, all of the other steps become much more attainable, because you’re removing one of the biggest technical barriers out there. Now it is the time to put relevant content and start educating your target audience with blog, article, video, webinars, presentations, podcasts and son one. This will give you authority around your niche and if you apply SEO techniques, different search engines also recognize you according to your niche, how active you are and how your content is engaging with your target market. Foundation has other essential elements:

  • A robust and active social media presence.
  • A large emergency fund — just in case and for the slow months.
  • Tools and software that help grow your business.
  • Connecting with your audience on a deeper level (let’s call it make a closer relationship with your customer by adding meaningful value to their lives)

3)Be a genuine version of yourself

We can learn from successful entrepreneurs, we can understand how their success mindset works. But, there is absolutely no way to copy success. Because the method which works for them may not work for you. Therefore, after the definition of niche and target market, you do need to focus to find a strong identity for your very own business model and try to digest all related information not only to expert level but also to mastery level.

4)Marketing and grow your audience

Nowadays digital entrepreneurs and business owners dream about marketing online and reaching out to millions of web users but making it happen is nothing less than a challenge.

As I mentioned in two of my previous blog posts ( Fundamentals of Affiliate Marketing—Part 2: Traffic generation with Paid Advertising and Fundamentals of Affiliate Marketing—Part 3: Traffic generation with Free-Low Cost Advertising), there are different strategies to build, grow and maintain your market. These strategies mainly can be divided into 2 main streams:

  • Paid Advertising
  • Free and Low-Cost Advertising

After defining your target market and preparing your foundation (relevant content to add value), the main focus in your new online business must be reaching out to your audience by using the aforementioned methods.

5)Add value first, promote later

What is the one thing your digital business is willing to give away that both provide value to your customers and illustrates your lifestyle business’s value?

E-Books, Videos, online free Workshops, Conferences, Webinars, online access discount coupons are the typical method you can add value to your audience and let them trust you and your professional identity. Of course, you need to educate yourself first with state of the art knowledge and information related to your niche then start to teach and educate your target market around that niche.

One very important item to take into consideration is you really do not need to be an expert to be able to educate your target audience. You only need to be one step ahead of them, then create valuable content and put those content in the right place and right time according to your market.

6)Try, re-calibrate, try again

After completing the above steps, you need to come back to your content, website, landing page, and for sure your marketing campaigns so often and try to improve their performance.

Google analytics, for example, is a great and powerful tool and if you are going to set up your advertising directly on google or YouTube, then you have this opportunity to follow and monitor your advertising campaigns by many different parameters. You can monitor which ad is converting and more effective for you and then try to improve their performance.

Focus on what’s working and commit only to learn what will help your lifestyle business grow. Don’t become a victim of information overload. That has crippled many entrepreneurs.

    I am really loving the theme/design of your website. Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility problems? A couple of my blog audience have complained about my site not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome. Do you have any recommendations to help fix this problem?

      Hi Melany, this really depends on your theme, if only very few numbers of your readers are complaining, mots probably this issues comes from their IE. You can check this also by your own and open your blog on different devices with different browsers. If the problem still remains, contact your Theme provider directly.
